Couple uneasy after golf cart stolen multiple times

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Lannie Road is home to the Montgomery Correctional Center, the Veterans Cemetery and several homes. Alvin and Norma Higginbotham have lived in the area more nearly two decades and said the past few weeks have been the most difficult.

"I don't trust anybody now," said Norma Higginbotham.

The peace and security they once enjoyed has been shattered.

"Everything is locked up," she said, "We don't know what to expect."

On April 23, someone stole their golf cart from their backyard.

"They come in here and got it one night," she said, "and went out the front gate with it."

It was recovered by police but it cost them $170 to get it from the towing company. They thought everything was okay but on April 30, it happened again.

The police reports describe both incidents as criminal mischief, but the family said it is not, the golf cart is their personal transportation.

"My husband is almost disabled so I bought it for him to ride around," said Norma, "He uses it to get the paper, the mail and do things in the yard."

After the last attempt to steal it, they decided to secure it to a pole with a heavy chain. They have also installed security cameras around the property.

But they still worry because this they say is the latest in a rash of incidents in their neighborhood. Higginbotham said there have been acts of vandalism and break-ins to other properties.

"I'd like to see this neighborhood cleaned up," she said.
