COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Two children are in critical condition and two others seriously injured in a crash on State Road 8 near Live Oak Saturday morning.
A three-month-old and four-year-old are in critical condition after investigators say the Chevy Suburban they were in flipped over. A12- and 15-year-old in the SUV sustained serious injuries, and two other passengers were listed as having minor injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol report does not say if the passengers were wearing seatbelts.
Crash investigators say a 2007 Ford truck was traveling eastbound in the right hand lane when the Ford's driver attempted to change lanes. Troopers say the Chevy's driver swerved to avoid hitting the Ford.
The Chevy lost control and crossed back into the eastbound lanes, this time causing the Ford's driver to swerve, and, investigators say, later drive into a ditch. The three passengers in the Ford were not injured.
That was not the case, however, for the passengers in the other vehicle. Troopers say the Chevy began to flip after it reentered the roadway, eventually landing across both lanes of traffic in the east lanes of State Rd. 8.
There was never a collision between the two vehicles, investigators say.
