Charges: Woman killed Thanksgiving guest after crack pipe dispute

MINNEAPOLIS - A woman is accused of killing her Thanksgiving guest during a dispute over a crack pipe, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

According to the criminal complaint, 47-year-old Anenia Marie Hare called 911 four times on Thanksgiving. When officers responded to her apartment on 33rd Avenue South in Minneapolis, they found a 69-year-old man face down in the living room, near a broken window. The man was brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hare told police that she'd had the man over for Thanksgiving dinner, but became angry when he lit a crack pipe without asking permission or offering to share. According to the criminal complaint, Hare said "in an attempt to be dominating," she stood with a TV antenna in one hand and a butcher knife in the other, telling the victim he could not leave.

According to the complaint, the victim called for neighbors to call 911 as Hare stood between him and the exit. Hare told authorities the man then grabbed a vacuum cleaner and broke the window, and Hare grabbed him by the shoulders and fell on top of him. Hare told investigators that she struggled with the victim as he tried to get the knife, then after she'd been on top him for a while, "he started snoring."

Hare told the responding officers, "I just grabbed him by the front of his chest and he went down. To me I just felt like I put him in a sleeper hold or something."

The autopsy report ruled the victim's cause of death "homicidal violence." Hare is charged with second-degree murder without intent. The victim has not been identified.
