Palm Beach County school officials say schools are closed Friday because of flooding.

St. Lucie County public schools are also closed Friday because of sanitation concerns related to Thursday's weather, Superintendent Genelle Yost said.

"Sanitation is an absolute must and we cannot take a chance on the safety of our students or our employees," Yost said late Thursday.

Yost said waste water services are not expected to be resolved in portions of St. Lucie County, mainly the Fort Pierce area by Friday morning. Yost referred a reporter to the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority for more information but utility representatives did not return calls for comment.

"My understanding is that we've got possible waste that will be in our streets tomorrow. We've got lift stations at several of our schools and they cannot guarantee that they will be up and functioning tomorrow morning."

Yost said 12 month employees will still be expected to report to work Friday.

"We need to check out our facilities," Yost said. "We need to do whatever is necessary to make certain everything is in order for Monday morning when students return."

Whether or not the district will have to make up the day off is unknown at this point, Yost said.

"That will have to be discussed with the governor," she said.
