FERNANDINA BEACH -- A man told police he fainted driving his SUV on A1A early Saturday morning. He awoke inside of a building, smoke was rising around him. Minutes later the vehicle and the building caught on fire.
Lt. Curtis Bollinger with the Nassau County Fire Rescue said it all happened around 5 a.m. Saturday morning.
The man was injured, but he walked away with non-life threatening injuries with the help of a person that happened to be driving by. He was taken to Baptist Medical Center Nassau.
The man crashed into a Fernandina Beach Enterprise Rental Car building, which residents say was a Pizza Hut just a year ago. The result was a large fire that consumed 20 percent of the building, Bollinger said.
Crews with the NCFR responded and were able to put out the fire in about 7 minutes.
Despite the damage, owner John Byrne said Enterprise will remain open and operate on its normal business hours. Around 10 a.m. construction crews began arriving to make repairs.
No other injuries were reported.
