JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Sheriff's Office deputy Michael Pelletier wrestled a gun away from a suspect Saturday evening, and lived to tell about it.

Pelletier was on duty in his patrol car at the Exxon station on Kings Road around 6:00 p.m. when he witnessed a shooting, said JSO Chief Annie Smith.

Michael Jerome Hudson, 55, approached a stopped green car at Barnett and Kings Road and allegedly began firing multiple shots into the car with Pelletier looking on.

The JSO officer got out of his car and approached Hudson who continued shooting at the green car as it sped away.

Pelletier approached, fired one shot in the direction of the suspect, and Hudson took off on foot, Smith said.

Pelletier jumped back into his cruiser to pursue the suspect.

Smith said when Pelletier located Hudson on nearby Blue St. he had his gun drawn and was pointing it at the approaching police cruiser.

Pelletier accelerated, slammed into the suspect and knocked him to the ground, Smith said.

The suspect fired one shot before Pelletier wrestled the gun away from him and placed him under arrest.

Pelletier, who has been employed with JSO since 2006, was placed on administrative leave.

Smith said the person driving the green car returned to scene and is cooperating with police.

Hudson was transferred to UF Health with non-life threatening injuries.

Officer Pelletier earned the "Police Officer of the Month" award for his assistance in apprehending a murder suspect following a shooting on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011.
