ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A trombone player at Oakleaf High School is proving to be quite an inspiration - not just to him band members, but everyone around him!

Conner Hartigan has high functioning autism. He's been through a lot already - including treatment in a hyperbari chamber and doctors telling his family he "wouldn't amount to very much."

"We were told way back ... We could expect him to be put in a group home and accept it for what it is," said Tim Hartigan, Conner's dad.

For years, Conner found some relaxation in music. Today, he plays four instruments - and leads the trombone section of the Oakland Knights band.

"It makes me feel good," Conner said.

He said he's glad he's where he is today, and has the support he has.

"I feel relaxed..because they just believed in me," he said.

Conner said he has no intention of putting the instruments down. He's planning on continuing to lead the trombone section until he graduates.
