OCALA, Fla. -- An apparent sinkhole might have swallowed a small lake in an Ocala neighborhood.

Woodland Villages Association property manager Wes Herren said he noticed something happening to the lake around 12 p.m. Tuesday.

By 4:30 p.m., Herren says his phone was bombarded with calls from residents saying the "pond disappeared". The lake was monitored until 8:30 p.m.

Herren says he called engineers, area contractors and the city's public works department for help. By nightfall, the lake - which once took up about 5 acres and was up to 8-feet deep in places - was drained.

Manager says the city says it's up to the property owners and board of directors to take care of it.

Engineers have been to the area to access the incident. The cause for the water drainage has not been confirmed as a sinkhole.

The area is roped off for the public's protection.

Woodland Villages has about 700 residents living in estate homes, condominiums, townhomes and patio homes. Herren says a similar incident happened in 1996.
