Two-alarm fire out at Mandarin Apartment complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --  The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to an apartment fire Sunday afternoon, according to a JFRD Facebook post.

Station 51 is was on scene at Woods of Mandarin Apartments and the JFRD post says command called for a second alarm.

According to District Chief Roger Lewis, about 85 firefighters from 25 units responded to the scene.

The fire damaged four apartment units upstairs and four downstairs. All the residents made it out of the units safely and no firefighters were injured, Lewis said.

The apartment building is connected to another complex, which firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading.

It took the crews about 25 minutes to get the fire under control.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to help the residences affected by the fire. According to a Red Cross release, volunteers are meeting with 16 families to help provide things such as temporary lodging and financial assistance to replace food, clothing, medications and other necessities.

It is not known at this time if they will be relocated to another unit in the complex.

A witness said that a fire was spotted behind the couch before they left the building. However, it is unknown how it started.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
