JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Seven people were injured, including one man who sustained life-threatening injuries, after a two-vehicle crash on Sunday.

Around 7:52 p.m., a red Volkswagen was stopped in the southbound lane of I-295 near Alden Rd. The driver stopped to speak with a pedestrian.

While stopped, the Volkswagen was struck from behind by a black Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The impact from the crash forced the Volkswagen to pin the pedestrian to a nearby concrete wall.

The pedestrian, identified in an FHP report released Monday as 37-year-old Paul Michael Carney, was transported to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries.

"We are treating it as a possible fatality," Sgt. Dylan Bryan said on Sunday night. Carney was listed as being in critical condition on the FHP report.

All three passengers in the Volkswagen, including a 3-year-old child, were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Each passenger was wearing a seat belt.

The three passengers in the Jeep, including a 6-year-old, were taken to the hospital in serious and critical conditions. None of the passengers in that vehicle were wearing seat belts, according to FHP.

"Alcohol is a possible factor," Bryan said. Charges are pending further investigation, according to the FHP report.
