JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An off-duty officer has died in a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has confirmed.
Officer Tchenter Wilson, 43, served 15 years with JSO. Sheriff John Rutherford issued this statement:
"This is a sad day for the men and women of the
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Officer
Tchenter Wilson, a 15-year veteran of our agency was killed tonight in a crash,
while off duty in his personal vehicle. Anytime we lose one of our JSO family it is difficult. Our prayers are with the Wilson family, and
we stand ready to assist them and his many friends in any way we can."
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash on North Busch Drive at Malnove Drive at 8:30 p.m., according to FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan.
The head-on collision between Wilson in an SUV and a tractor-trailer happened around 7:30 p.m. right in front of Fire Station 37.
According to an FHP report, Wilson's SUV was traveling south on Busch Drive. The tractor-trailer, driven by 50-year-old Timothy P. Thomas, was traveling north on Busch Drive.
Wilson's SUV "crossed the center line into the northbound lane" and struck the tractor-trailer head on, the report said.
The SUV burst into flames and the tractor-trailer driver got out of the truck without injury. Wilson was transported to UF Health with life-threatening injuries and he later died.
FHP is handling the crash, Bryan said. JSO initially responded to the crash and then called FHP for backup.
The crash is still under investigation and there is no cause determined as of yet, Bryan said.
