LAKE CITY, Fla. -- An 11-year-old boy is in critical condition after a 4-year-old accidentally shot him.
According to the Lake City Police Department, officers responded to Cedar Park Apartments after a report of a shooting incident on Sunday.
"I saw a young man just crying and screaming 'somebody help me,'" said neighbor Barbara Allen.
She was just getting up when she heard the gunshot next door early Sunday morning. She said she ran outside to help, but it was too late.
"After the police came and they pulled the baby out, it just hurt my heart," she said.
In a phone interview, 11-year-old Jarvin Jackson's grandmother said his 2- and 4-year-old brother and sister were playing with the gun when Jarvin tried to get it away from them.
Jarvin's grandmother said it went off accidentally, hitting Jarvin in the neck.
"It was Mother's Day. I couldn't even imagine how the mother felt on Mother's Day," said Allen.
His mother is now sitting at his bedside at UF Shands. Jarvin's aunt said he suffered a small stroke this morning, and is on a ventilator.
Allen said the whole neighborhood is pulling for him.
"It's just sad, scary, I didn't know what to think. That was just a sad sight to see," said Allen.
According to LCPD, the shooting incident has been ruled accidental.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm by the minor is ongoing.
