JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Quick action from two members of a Navy dive team is being credited with helping to keep dozens of children and parents safe after shots were fired near a school.

The Mayport Dive Team members were helping to clean up a nearby park as part of Earth Day.

"Everybody was excited," Mulbach said. "It was a good time."

They were with about 14 seamen, dozens of children, parents and others who were volunteering to clean up the Justina Road park and playground.

"Everybody was happy to be outside and help the community," Mulbach said. "Just to do the clean up. It was a lot of fun."

When they heard shots, they quickly sprang into action.

Muhlbach said around 2 p.m., he heard about 5 shots fired near the school.

"As soon as the shots rang out, they were with me too," Mulbach said. "Getting people behind the school and shouting out directions. Making sure everybody was going to be safe.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Doran said he called police, who responded immediately.

Both men, who have children themselves, said they don't want to be called heroes.

"We would do anything that the parents would do too. It's the same thing they would do for their own kids," Doran said.

The divers said the whole incident lasted less than 3 minutes.

They credit heroic action to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The divers told First Coast News if they had to, they would do it again.

They also said they plan on being there for the next community park cleanup event.
