CLAY COUNTY, Fla. - A Jacksonville man is in custody following a high speed chase through two counties early Wednesday morning.

Terrell Devon Bennett, 22, was allegedly observed by deputies stopping in traffic, "for apparently no reason," according to a police report from the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies ran the tag on the red Toyota Corolla Bennett was allegedly driving and determined the tag did not match the car, the report detailed.

When deputies attempted to pull Bennett over, Bennett allegedly accelerated to 80 miles-per-hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone, according to the report.

Bennett allegedly continued to drive at a high rate of speed while a deputy with the CCSO attempted to throw-down "stop sticks" in an effort to stop Bennett. However, according to the report, Bennett was able to swerve his Corolla towards the deputy instead. The deputy claims he feared Bennett was going to hit him. The deputy allegedly had to run out of the way to avoid being hit by Bennett, the report states.

Additional CCSO deputies joined the effort to apprehend Bennett and deputies were successfully able to thrown down "stop sticks" at Blanding Blvd. and Orange Park Northway, according to the report.

However, the chase allegedly continued at a high rate of speed and crossed into Duval County, the report detailed.

Bennett eventually lost control of the Corolla, according to the report, and crashed into a business on the 1500 block of Blanding Blvd.

Bennett is charged with fleeing and attempting to elude an officer, driving while license suspended, reckless driving and assault on law enforcement officer. Bennett is being held without bond in the Clay County Jail.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the crash and has estimated at least $50,000 in damage to the business.
