An intermediate school in Coweta, Okla., was closed for the day on Monday after a ninth-grade student reportedly committed suicide, according to Newson6.com.

The Tulsa TV station said Coweta's school superintendent confirmed that the shooting occurred Monday morning in a school bathroom.

Jeff Holmes, Coweta school superintendent, said in a phone message, without elaboration: "I regret to inform you that we have a tragic incident at our intermediate high school today."

At a brief news conference, Coweta Police Lt. Donnie Krumsiek offered few details, except to say that "no firearms were discharged in the buildlng." He did not provide any additional information.

Krumsiek said three police officers responded within seconds to a phone call from the school at 8:35 a.m. local time.

"Everything is under control," he said. "The schools did an outstanding job, immediately going into lockdown."

The intermediate school was closed for the day, but other schools in the city were kept open. Ninth graders were sent to the gym until parents arrived.

Coweta is a city of 9,500 people located 25 miles southeast of Tulsa.
