The man died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,
authorities said. The body was found near the Bass Pro Shop at Riverview
in Mesa, near the Loop 202 and Dobson Road, Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve
Martos said.
The suspected shooter's vehicle, a rented Kia Optima, also was found in the area, Martos said.
Police were alerted to the scene after a citizen found the body, Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato said.
Harmon was last seen fleeing the area of the shooting, near 16th
Street and Glendale Road, shortly after the incident took place, about
10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Harmon fired at least one shot at a witness who
gave chase from the office building where the shooting took place,
causing the witness to back away. Harmon has not been seen since.
Phoenix Police believe Harmon targeted two men and shot another
bystander following a pre-litigation meeting at the broad multi-story
building in north-central Phoenix. Steve Singer, the 48-year-old
chief-executive officer at a call center and defendant in a lawsuit
filed by Harmon, was killed. Mark Hummels, a 43-year-old attorney
representing Singer, suffered serious wounds to his neck and back but
physicians are optimistic about his recovery, according to a colleague.
Nicole Hampton, 32, was caught in gunfire near the building entrance and
suffered a wound to her hand.
Law enforcement throughout the Valley responded to suspected
sightings of Harmon Wednesday night and into the early morning Thursday,
including one incident where a grocery-store employee in East Mesa
reported seeing a vehicle matching Harmon's going through the parking
lot at a high rate of speed. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office
handled the call, in an unincorporated area of the county near Broadway
Road and Loop 202, but the incident produced no viable information.
