BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Teachers at a local school are getting an A+ for setting a healthy example.

On Vickie Bumgardner's desk sits a bottle of water.  She's cutting down on calories and taking four exercise classes a week.  Since the beginning of January she has lost 14 lbs and is the leader in the School Slimdown Challenge at Risley Middle School in Brunswick.

"Everybody is talking about it, you see people on their planning period trying to walk a little farther to the copy machine," says Bumgardner with a laugh.

While it is only staff competing, students throughout the school are cheering on their favorite teachers to keep away from the candy and stay on track.

"They will say 'is it weigh-in day? How's it going?'  Things like that," tells Mrs. Bumgardner.

Just one pound behind Mrs. Bumgardner and currently in second place is business and computer teacher Mr. Roberson.

"For me, I was addicted to Coca-Cola. I was drinking upwards of 5 or 6 Cokes a day. So for me taking the soda away and drinking only water makes a huge difference," says Brian Roberson.

Overall the 36 staff members participating have already lost a combined 181 lbs!

The winner will get around $360 and bragging rights for the next year, but the teachers say the best part is being good, healthy examples for their students.

"It nice for them [the students] to see everybody doing it," says Bumgardner.
