The Mayport ferry is struggling to attract ridership.

MAYPORT, Fla. -- The ferry costs $6 for a one-way ride across the St. Johns River, but the fare increase is hardly adding to bottom line.

Our news partner The Florida Times-Union is reporting that ferry ridership for three months ending last December is down nearly ten percent.

That drop in ridership translates into an operating deficit. When you subtract revenue from expenses, the ferry operated in the red for three months by $120,000.

The St. Johns River Ferry Commission took over the operation last fall following a grass roots campaign last year to give the ferry a new lease on life.

The commission points out that ridership during the winter is down compared to spring and summer.
