JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Jaguars Owner Shad Khan and Team President Mark Lamping officially named David Caldwell the General Manager of the Jaguars. The announcement came during a Thursday afternoon press conference.

"I spent considerable effort identifying absolutely the top football talent, front office talent. I can share with you the person who will help bring championships to Jacksonville: David Caldwell was on the top of my list," Khan said.

"This is where I want to be. I know we can be successful here," said Caldwell. "I am thoroughly looking forward to starting here and hitting the ground running."

Previously, Caldwell was the Director of Player Personel for the Atlanta Falcons. This is his first General Manager position.

Caldwell replaces Gene Smith, the Jaguars General Manager since 2009. Smith was fired on December 31st.

"A year ago when I came here, the organizational judgment was that we were a pretty good team, just a few players and a draft away from really competing for a playoff spot. As the year progressed, it was pretty obvious that was not the case. We would really need a fresh start and rebuild from the ground up," Khan explained.

The Jags are coming off their worst season in franchise history at 2-14.

Former Head Coach Mike Mularkey was fired earlier Thursday after one season with the team. Khan said Caldwell will now lead the search for the next coach.

"We had a difficult conversation with Mike [Murlarkey]. I appreciate Mike's efforts here the last year," Caldwell said on his decision to let Mularkey go. "I felt like we needed a fresh start here."

He said there is already a list of potential list of coaching candidates to replace Mularkey.

Caldwell also hushed any speculation on New York Jets Quarterback Tim Tebow coming to the team saying, "I can't imagine a scenario where [Tebow] would be a Jacksonville Jaguar."

He repeated the statement when asked even if Tebow was released from the Jets.

Caldwell called for a whole new attitude for the Jaguars saying, "We're looking for positive, passionate people and players. We have a great opportunity and a great obligation here to be the first. To be the first to bring a Super Bowl Championship to Jacksonville. To be the first General Manager to help Shad [Khan] bring a Super Championship to Jacksonville. To be the first Head Coach and set of players to bring a Super Bowl Championship to Jacksonville. I believe we can do this, and I promise moving forward we will do this. We will get better day by day and give Jacksonville fans everything they deserve, which is the best."
