JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 20-year-old died New Year's Day when the Dodge Ram truck she was riding in hit a large overhead sign post. Three other passengers are in the hospital.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, 19-year-olds Samantha Kasten of Coral Springs and Jacob Materia of Jacksonville are in critical condition at Shands Hospital.
The driver, 20-year-old Sean Franke of Longwood is also Shands but in stable condition.
20-year-old Dara Kusiv of Longwood was pronounced dead at the scene. Posts on social media say all of the passengers were students at the University of North Florida.
A crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol said the silver Dodge Ram driven by Franke was traveling west on Beach Blvd. approaching Kernan Boulevard shortly before 1 a.m.
The report said for an unknown reason the driver steered the truck to the right and exited the road onto the shoulder. When it did, the front of the truck hit a large overhead sign post.
Neither Kusiv nor Franke were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, the report said.
FHP said charges are pending.
