ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A 31-year-old St. Johns County man is facing charges after he crashed his car into a pole Tuesday night with his one-year-old daughter inside.

Kevin Kelshaw, Media Relations Officer with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, said deputies signed a complaint affidavit for charges of reckless driving and culpable negligence against Kenneth Leonard Johnson.

Kelshaw said Tuesday night a St. Johns County Sheriff's deputy observed a vehicle, allegedly driven by Johnson, traveling northbound on State Road 13 at a high rate of speed. When the deputy activated his radar, Kelshaw said the driver's speed registered 115 miles per hour. The posted speed limit for that stretch of road is 55 miles per hour.

The deputy turned around, Kelshaw said, to attempt to stop the car.

Kelshaw said as the deputy came to the intersection of County Road 305 and State Road 13 he watched Johnson lose control of the car and leave the roadway.  The car then struck a telephone pole and caught fire, Kelshaw said.

After the crash, police said Johnson immediately got out of the vehicle and tried to remove a small child from the car seat in the rear of the vehicle.

Additional deputies rendered aid until St. Johns County Fire Rescue personnel arrived.

Kelshaw said the one-year-old was not injured in the crash and was released to a relative.

Emergency medical personnel transported Johnson to the Orange Park Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Johnson is charged with culpable negligence, Kelshaw said, because he allegedly exposed his one-year-old daughter to personal injury while speeding.
