Florida Highway Patrol: Stolen car goes into water near Shands Bridge

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A reportedly stolen car was intentionally driven into the water near the Shands Bridge, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The bridge is part of State Road 16 and connects St. Johns County and Clay County.

The car, a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo, was driven into the water in a westerly direction at the east end of the bridge. A concrete block was found on the gas pedal, according to the FHP report.

The Monte Carlo traveled over concrete pieces on the river bank, into the water, and became submerged up to the roof.

The vehicle, which was registered to a Jacksonville resident, has been removed from the river with no persons being discovered by the Marine Units and SJSO divers, according to Sgt. Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. The Clay County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.
