22-year-old dies after pellet gun shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 22-year-old was taken off life support Saturday after he was critically wounded when a shot from a pellet gun perforated his heart, according to an official with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Charles Howey's parents and medical professionals gave the authorization early Saturday morning, according to Public Information Officer Shannon Hartley with JSO.

He was pronounced dead at 11:31 a.m., Hartley said.

Melissa Bujeda with the Sheriff's Office, said two friends, Howey and 21-year-old Cory Barnes, were playing around with a pellet gun at Barnes' Westside home Thursday night.

Bujeda said the gun discharged and struck Howey in the chest, perforating his heart.

Rescue personnel transported Howey to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Hartley said the the investigation is continuing, pending review with the State Attorney's Office.
