PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- A 22-year-old woman was in critical condition Monday morning after she was ejected from a golf cart late Sunday afternoon.
Kevin Kelshaw, Media Relations Officer with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, said the crash happened near Pablo Road, just west of Ponte Vedra Boulevard around 5:15 p.m. Sunday.
Kelshaw said traffic homicide investigators determined the cart was on the Golf Cart Path on the north side of Pablo Road.
Atlantic Beach resident Cohen Lairsey, 23, who was driving at the time, made a left turn to cross Pablo Road and drove into the area of the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club where the golf carts are returned.
When Lairsey turned left, Kelshaw said 22-year-old Katherine Callaway of Ponte Vedra was ejected from the golf cart onto the concrete pavement.
Kelshaw said Callaway suffered life threatening injuries and was taken by rescue workers to Shands Jacksonville hospital. Kelshaw said she was listed in critical condition. As of late Tuesday evening, she was still in critical condition.
Lairsey told investigators Callaway was texting with both hands when she was ejected from the cart.
Kelshaw said charges are pending upon the completion of the investigation.
