George P. Bush is getting some help from his father as he prepares for his first political race in Texas.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush wrote his supporters asking them to write a check for his son "as he begins his quest for public service." The younger Bush, 36, has his eye on the Texas Land Commissioner's job in 2014, according to his dad's letter.

The land commissioner oversees the state's vast real estate assets and mineral rights. The job has often been a steppingstone to higher office, as current Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst can attest. (He was land commissioner from 1999 to 2003.)

"George's experience and skills match the job," wrote the elder Bush, as he recounted his son's real estate and legal work, service in Afghanistan in the Navy Reserve and his outreach to Hispanic Republicans.

"Oh, what can I say? I am proud of my son," Jeb Bush said.

George P. Bush filed his paperwork last week saying he intended to run for office. But the specific race wasn't known until his father's fundraising letter came to light Wednesday in the Tampa Bay Times.
