JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The father of a baby who was abandoned by its mother has been arrested and charged with lewd/lascivious battery on someone older than 12 but younger than 16.
Reginald Person Jr., 18, was arrested on Friday on the battery charges against the mother of the baby, Amber Collins.
Collins, 15, was arrested last week for Child Neglect, which is a second degree felony, according
Police responded to the Huntington Apartments at 3333 Monument Road
5:30 p.m. Oct. 24. They found the baby wrapped only in a towel.
The baby was found outside unit 1112, which has been vacant since
July. After she was found, she was taken to a local hospital. She was
only a few hours old when she was found. She is now doing well.
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, JSO received a call from Collins' mother, who stated that she thought her daughter had given birth to the baby.
Collins on Wednesday, Oct. 31 admitted to police that she left the baby at the vacant apartment.
Cristessa Myers and her two young sons initially found the infant on the second floor of their apartment complex. Her 7-year-old first spotted the baby girl.
According to Florida's Safe Haven Law, a child 7 days old or younger can be left at a fire station, emergency medical services station or
hospital without any recourse.
