SEASIDE HEIGHTS - Mayor Bill Akers says he has never seen this type of devastation before. Funtown Pier on the northern end of the boardwalk is totally gone, and all rides are underwater.

"There has to be a billion dollars of damage here. I never could have imagined it," Akers said.

"Police Chief Thomas Boyd and Fire Chief James Samarelli and Department of Public Works Billy Rumboli put their lives on the line for people who just didn't think" and had to be rescued, the mayor said.

There are currently 40 officers and firefighters still involved in evacuation efforts being coordinated with Toms River, he said. The National Guard has been asked for assistance, but so far there has been none, the mayor added.

He said there had been some looting, and added, "It is inconceivable to me that people would prey on other people's misery during this time."
