LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A Lake City Police Officer investigating a fight Sunday night found himself in the fight when one of the men involved attacked him.
Craig Strickland, assistant public Information officer for the Lake City Police Department said around 11 p.m. Sunday night officers were called to the Publix parking lot on US 90 after reports of a fight.
When the radio call went out that a fight in progress was happening, a Lake City Police Officer and a Reserve Officer were driving a man they arrested for DUI to the Columbia County Detention Center.
As the two officers passed the Publix, several people flagged them down to ask for assistance.
Strickland said as the two officers got out of their patrol car, 41-year-old Sidney Williams "aggressively" approached the car yelling at the officers.
One of the officers tried to talk to Williams to find out what was going on. While talking with police, Strickland said Williams began yelling, cursing and swinging his arms at the officer. In an attempt to avoid being struck, the officer moved out of Williams' path, who ended up walking into an active travel lane of US 90.
When police ordered Williams out of the roadway, Strickland said he became angrier, yelling more profanities and swinging his arms violently in an effort to hit the officer.
Strickland said the officers performed a "defensive tactics take down maneuver" to get Williams to the ground so he could be handcuffed. Williams fought back by grabbing at police, resisting their attempts to restrain him.
Williams even continued to resist police even after he was handcuffed, Strickland said.
Police arrested Sidney Williams and transported him to the Columbia County Detention Center where he was booked on a $6,000 bond. He is charged with assault on an officer and resisting an officer with violence.
Strickland said as corrections deputies were booking Williams he continued to resist and was tased so he would comply.
