LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County prosecutors say the onetime owner of upscale restaurants in LA and Miami repeatedly attempted to force a drug-induced miscarriage on his then-girlfriend in 2009, and he's now been charged with four counts of attempted murder.

Joshua Woodward, a co-owner of Table 8 in Los Angeles who now lives in Florida, pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

The unusual case has been under investigation for three years.

Prosecutors allege Woodward tried to kill "Baby Doe" four times in September and October 2009 using misoprostol, a drug that can terminate early-stage pregnancies.

The woman went on to miscarry. It's not clear why only attempted murder charges were filed, and messages left with prosecutors were not immediately returned.

Woodward is being held on $4 million bail and could face life in prison.
