ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Two people are in serious condition after an accident on U.S. 1 N. near County Road 210 W.
Leonard Centers, 59, and Mary Centers, 50, of Indianapolis, Ind., were traveling north in a 2012 Mazda 3 on U.S. 1, waiting to make a left turn on to CR 210 W, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Gary Barbour, 50, and Kelli Barbour, 54, of St. Augustine, were in a 1998 Isuzu Amigo waiting behind the Centers' vehicle in the left turn lane.
Meanwhile, Michael Legget, 35, of Middleburg, was driving a 2005 Freightliner on U.S. 1 northbound approaching CR 210 when the Centers' vehicle pulled into his vehicle's path, according to the report.
The right front of the Freightliner struck the left rear of the Mazda. The truck then turned onto its side after rotating counter-clockwise, coming to rest on top of the Mazda's hood.
The Isuzu was pushed by the impact of the Freightliner and damaged by debris coming off of the Freightliner, the report said.
The Centers had to be extricated from their vehicle, according to Jeremy Robshaw of the St. Johns County Fire Rescue Department.
Leonard Centers was transported to Shands by air and the Mary Centers was transported to Baptist South in stable condition, Robshaw said.
Legget had minor injuries and the Barbours had no injuries. Leonard Centers is charged with an improper turn in front of approaching traffic, according to the report.
