JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- JTA's Board of Directors voted to continue the Skyway as fare-free for another year.

The Skyway has been free since January 30, 2012, and will remain that way until at least September 30, 2013.

The Board's decision was partially based on a report detailing the positive impact the fare elimination has had on ridership. In the six-month period that was studied, Skyway ridership grew by 62.7% or 480,956 boardings.

That's up from 295,602 over the same time frame for the previous year.

"This is a huge success for JTA and its riders," said Michael J. Blaylock, JTA's CEO.

"The Skyway serves as a critical link in our transportation system and connects many modes of public transit. Keeping the Skyway fare-free will improve efficiency within the transit system, saving our customers time and money."
