FHP releases identity in fatal crash on I-95 south near Race Track Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol released the name of a driver killed on I-95 southbound before the Race Track Road overpass early Monday morning.

The crash happened around 4:50 a.m. All lanes remained open as emergency crews worked the scene in the right emergency lane.

According to an FHP crash report, 71-year-old George Thomas, of Folkston, Ga., was riding with 70-year-old Alex Sweat of Hilliard in a 2003 Ford pick-up in the center lane of I-95 South.

Bruce Allen, 56, was driving a 2004 Ford pick-up truck in the outside lane of I-95 South when he traveled into the center lane, hitting the trailer being towed by the truck with Thomas and Sweat inside.

The crash caused the truck carrying Sweat and Thomas to cross into the inside lane, hitting a 2001 Chevrolet pick-up truck that was in the inside lane.

The Ford with Sweat and Thomas continued across the highway until it ended up on the grass shoulder where it overturned and the continued into the woodline.

Geroge Thomas, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed in the crash.  The driver of the pickup carrying him, Alex Sweat, was also wearing a seat belt.  He was taken to Orange Park Medical Center with serious injuries.

Bruce Allen, who was driving in the truck that crossed into Sweat and Thomas' lane was not injured in the crash.

The two people in the Chevrolet pick-up truck that was hit while in the inside also were uninjured.

The Florida Highway Patrol said charges are pending.
