GLEN ST. MARY, Fla. -- An 18-year-old driving on County Road 125 in Glen St. Mary had to climb out of his submerged car's window after falling asleep at the wheel and flipping his car into a creek.
Marcus Barnes was driving on County Road 125 five miles North of Glen St. Mary around 7:25 a.m. Thursday morning, according to a crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The report said Barnes fell asleep while driving. When he did, the 2002 F-150 he was driving drifted off the northbound shoulder of the road.
The truck's right front hit a bridge rail at the Cedar Creek canal, causing the truck to go airborne and land in the creek below.
With the truck submerged, Barnes was able to climb out the driver side window and swim to the surface, the report said.
After getting out of the canal, Barnes flagged down a passing motorist and requested help.
Barnes, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, was cited for careless driving.
