JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police are investigating a body that was found in the water at the Marine installation on Blount Island Thursday morning.

The body, which has not yet been identified, has been removed from the water. The cause of death has yet to be determined, according to Jim Hooks, deputy commander for the Marine installation.

Hooks and the commanding officer were notified Thursday morning that a body was discovered floating in their slip lake.

The Marine Corps support facility has a port, which has five berths to bring ships in, and the body was found in one of the berths, Hooks said.

The local federal police were called, and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department were also called in to investigate.

It is still trying to be determined whose jurisdiction the investigation falls under, Hooks said. It may be Naval Criminal Investigative Service because it is a federal installation, or they may turn it over to JSO.
