Turns out the flag wasn't still there.

In a bit of ironic timing, the American flag flew into the wind during Serena Williams' gold medal ceremony at Wimbedon on Saturday. With her victory against Maria Sharapova, Williams completed a career Grand Slam.

As the flag flew away, the crowd let out a loud groan; Williams shrugged, kept smiling and waited for the anthem to finish.

"All these gusts of wind you then see the flag flying and oohhh it was probably flying to come hug me because the flag was so happy, it didn't quite make it but almost," she said, laughing. "It was fluttering towards me trying to wrap its fabric around me."

Sharapova was asked what she and Williams were talking about during the medal ceremony.

"Did you see that the U.S. flag dropped?" Sharapova said. "We were discussing that little issue."
