An emergency conference call is being held by the Florida State Board of Education today. It's in response to some very surprising news from the Commissioner of Education, Gerard Robinson.
Robinson unexpectedly turned in his resignation after just a year at the post. In the letter he submitted to Governor Rick Scott, Robinson said his resignation would be effective August 31 and living away from his family in Virginia was a challenge he could not overcome.
In his resignation letter he also listed nearly a full page of his accomplishments, but his year as the Commissioner of Education has had some glitches in the state's school grading system and pressure from lower FCAT scores.
The Florida State Board of Education, not the governor, will make the decision on who should replace Robinson.
That emergency conference call will be at 7:00 am. The call will be webcast live from the department's website at www.fldoe.org
