JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mabel Smart says the theater shootings in Colorado have left her worried about safety.
So it begs the question: is Jacksonville prepared for a similar situation? Sheriff John Rutherford addressed it on our On Point show Sunday.
"That's why we changed our strategy. Time is people dying. So when you have an active shooter, you immediately go right in. We're not going to to set up a perimeter. We're going in to find that shooter," Rutherford said.
Something else has emerged from Colorado. Police say many tweets and Facebook posts spread inaccurate information.
So leaders from across the First Coast, from police to firefighters, are learning the ins and outs of social media to get the right information to you quicker.
They signed up for a training session long before the tragedy in Colorado, but the timing wasn't ignored.
"You have to stay on top of the game. People are turning to social media more and more. They want instant information. And we want to give that to them," said Bruce Scott of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Smart thinks getting accurate information out in times of crisis can save lives.
"I think it would be a great way to communicate with everybody and keep everybody safe around the community," she said.
The city's has a new app for disaster readiness. It's called JaxReady is available on tablets and phones.
