ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A 55-year-old man was hit and killed by a car Tuesday as he was by mowing the grass on US 1.
The accident happened just before noon Tuesday as Mark Sowards of Elkton, Florida was mowing the grass along the shoulder of US 1 near Calinas Boulevard.
Sowards was on the northbound side's outside grass shoulder. Sowards came to a culvert, according to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, and drove his mower tractor into the outside travel lane of US 1, into the path of a 4-door Lexus, also headed northbound.
The impact caused Sowards to be ejected from the tractor, causing him to strike his head on the roadway.
Sowards was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Lexus, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.
