ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The St. Augustine Beach Police Department will blend with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

That's the decision from St. Augustine Beach City Commissioners Monday night in a tight 3-2 vote.

The decision centers around saving the city money, about $720,000 or 17% of St. Augustine Beach's budget.

The new Police Department will consist of a new Police Chief, 5 officers, a sergeant, and an administrative assistant.

The meeting was standing room only, with many leaving in disappointment.

City Commissioners named Sgt. Ralph Carrea of St. Augustine Beach Police acting Chief. He will remain in office until August 1st or until the city can appoint a new Chief.

The new incoming Chief can petition Commissioners for more officers after a few months in the position.

City Commissioners will start the search for a new Chief immediately.
