JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sharks have suspended their mascot, Chum, for the Sharks final regular season home game July 14.
The team made the announcement Thursday that Chum, the team's mascot and Director of Excitement, had been issued a one-game suspension. Chum was suspended because of an altercation with a fan during the Sharks game against the Milwaukee Mustangs July 6.
Chum will serve his suspension during the final regular season home game for the Sharks. It is also fan appreciation night.
The altercation with the fan happened near the Milwaukee players' bench prior to kickoff. Chum and a Milwaukee fan were arguing. When Chum tried to hit the fan with a cake the situation "escalated," according to a release on the team's website.
Chris Martin, Sharks Director of Community Relations said, "In the wake of what was a huge win for our team, this is tough news to take. But with some of [Chum's] recent behavior, I can't say I'm surprised."
Should the Sharks host a home playoff game, Chum would be eligible to return.
