CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. -- Flooding is expected overnight on St. Marys River.
People along the St. Marys River in Camden County are preparing for the worst.
"We've owned it 12 years now and this is the third time this has happened, but this is the worst it will ever be," said Roger Giddens.
Spring Hill Road is now closed. Authorities issued the mandatory evacuation order for two neighborhoods bordering the river -- Flea Hill and Johns Fish Camp. It affects about 40 homes and they're worried about rising flood waters that could strand residents.
"Historically, most of the homes in that area it did not enter the homes, it got very close. But this being a historic flood, we are anticipating that flood water to go into the homes," said Camden fire chief Dennis Gailey.
Gene Hughes made one last trek through floodwaters to grab a pillow and a cooler, hoping his home survives the flood.
"There are just so many variables in it, we don't know what to expect. We just know it's wet and all the people are out of our area," Hughes said.
