JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Starke, Fla., resident was sentenced today to 210 months in federal prison and a 10-year term of supervised release for using his tanning bed business to create child pornography.

Doyce Dean Griffis, 49, of Starke, Fla., pleaded guilty Feb. 14, 2012 to five charges of producing videos of child pornography.

In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales ordered Griffis to register as a sex offender and forfeit a computer, two video cameras and numerous forms of computer media.

Court documents revealed Griffis maintained and operated a tanning bed in an outbuilding at his Starke residence. He offered customers to use his tanning bed for money.

The outbuilding had a two-way mirror and a hole in an air vent that allowed Griffis to make video recordings of his customers undressing and using the tanning bed. Dozens of female customers, including more than 20 minors, had no knowledge of the mirror, hole or the video recordings.

Griffis said he also downloaded 103 videos and 45 images child pornography from the Internet.

The Bradford County Sherriff's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations were the organizations that investigated the case. The prosecutor was Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Rodney Brown.

This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative that began in May 2006 to fight child sexual exploitation and abuse.
