JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --  A man is in critical, but stable condition after being shot by an officer early Sunday morning.

According to Chief Tom Hackney, with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, around 2 a.m. Sunday, JSO received a call about an attempted suicide in the historic Springfield area.

Two officers responded to the call in the 100 block of East 5th St.

According to Chief Hackney, an acquaintance of the man called 911 saying he was armed with a knife and threatening to kill himself. Once on the scene, the officers noted the man was standing on the porch with a handgun.

"They gave instructions for that subject to drop the handgun. The subject raised the gun at them, actually took two steps towards them, raised the gun. One of the two officers fired one time," said Hackney.

The man was shot in the chest. Chief Hackney said he was transported to a local hospital.

The officers involved are on paid administration leave, which is standard procedure.

The man's has been identified as William Haines.  Police later determined the handgun Haines was armed with was a realistic-looking BB gun.

Hackney said Haines has been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
