JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Gators and the Georgetown Hoyas will be playing basketball on an aircraft carrier near the First Coast on Nov. 9, and Mayor Alvin Brown credits his staff with securing the high-profile game for the city's week-long military celebration.
"This is a unique way to say thank you to our military while putting Jacksonville on display for countless sports fans tuning in from all over the globe," said Brown.
"My staff, especially Sports and Entertainment Director Alan Verlander and the military affairs department, worked tirelessly on the details of this high-profile event to ensure a quality product that would boost Jacksonville's profile as one of America's most military-friendly cities."
Jacksonville Jaguars President Mark Lamping and his team will take the lead in the events of the week. Proceeds from the game will benefit veterans' transitional housing programs backed by Brown and Jaguars owner Shad Khan.
