JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police cruiser and a pedestrian.
The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday at North Main Street and Eastport Road. The crash closed down Eastport Road from North Main Street to Emuness in both directions.
FHP investigators said the JSO deputy, Officer Charles Reagor, was en route to a traffic crash with injuries at the time the crash happened.
Alain Martin, 33, from Hialeah, was outside of his tractor-trailer on the side of the road when he stepped out from behind the trailer and into the path of the JSO cruiser, which had its emergency lights on. The officer attempted to avoid hitting the man, running into a fence in the process, but was unable to do so.
Martin was taken to Shands Jacksonville with critical injuries. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The deputy, who has been employed with JSO since June 1, 1989, was not injured in the crash. He was wearing his seatbelt.
