JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police shot and killed a male shooting suspect who was fleeing in the 5800 block of Avenue B Thursday morning.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Tom Hackney said officers were resopnding to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue West and Avenue B.
When deputies arrived, they were given a description of the suspect and his vehicle, Hackney said.
Officers located the vehicle and tried to pull the man over.
Hackney said the suspect jumped out of the car, leaving his girlfriend sitting inside. She has been arrested for fleeing. Her name has not been released.
The suspect, whose name has also not yet been released, continued to run and crawled underneath a barber shop.
A JSO K-9 unit tried to get the suspect out from underneath barber shop.
When the officers were issuing verbal commands, Hackney said the suspect was yelling profanities back at them.
Police decided to send the police dog under the shop to get the man to crawl out. When they did, Hackney said it appeared the suspect reached for a gun. That's when deputies shot and killed him.
Hackney said when officers searched the suspect, they did not find a gun on him. Officers had reported seeing a gun in the man's waistband, Hackney said. Later, when officers were searching the area, they found the gun along the path the suspect ran.
