Memorial Day ceremonies and weekend events

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's a weekend full of Memorial Day events to honor the brave men and women in our armed forces. Adding to the ceremonies are a few favorites that promise to make this weekend one to remember.

SATURDAY MAY 26, 2012

JACKSONVILLE JAZZ FESTIVAL: The 2012 festival will continue the tradition of Jazz in Jacksonville with a variety of jazz genres and special components. Back again is Art in the Heart Art Show & Sale, a juried art show and sale, Wine Down: A Wine Tasting Experience featuring a variety of fine wines. Other activities include the 'Round Midnight Jazz Jam and a Jazz Brunch.

BLUE CRAB FESTIVAL: The FREE festival runs through Monday in Palatka. It's free to get in, be entertained, and to park! There will be a lot of fun events, including a duck race, cook-off contest, and an arts and crafts show. There will also be a big carnival with plenty of rides and a kid-zone. Wristbands are available for purchase to ride the rides. The Memorial Day parade will start at 10am down St. Johns Ave with the Memorial Day ceremony starting after the parade at the amphitheater. 60TH MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL OF FLORIDA: The Florida Folk Festival at the Stephen Foster State Park in White Springs, runs this Memorial Day weekend (both Saturday and Sunday). Billy Dean, Arlo Guthrie and John Anderson are some of the notable Florida artists who will be appearing. 11 stages, 3 arts and crafts areas and a huge dance floor. Come celebrate life, culture and the arts in Florida as the Florida State Parks system presents your 60th Florida Folk Festival. 

5 POINTS SPRING FESTIVAL: Featuring live music, beer tasting, food, vendors, shopping and arts and crasts, the 5 Points Spring Festival is this Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. with the after party continuing through 11 p.m. Ages 21 and up can purchase tickets for $20. http://5pointsjacksonville.com/index.html

1ST ANNUAL 5K JAX BEACH CHALLANGE: This is the 1st Annual 5K Jax Beach Challenge Run to raise money to send members of our Jax Beach Ocean Rescue Competition Team to the World Lifesaving Competition In Adelaide Australia. This is a competitive sport consisting of 4 divisions: -Open Men -Open Women -Boys (14 & under) -Girls (14 & under). The race starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Jax Beach Lifeguard Station,# 2 Oceanfront. Registration is $30. All proceeds benefit the Jax Beach Ocean Rescue Competition Team. For more information, Jblgcompteam.Org.

BEE PALOOZA: Joins Sweet Pete's Sun Ray Cinema and Springfield Community Gardens for the 2nd annual Bee Palooza! The FREE event starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a honey marshmallow bee to decorate. The fun continues at the Laura Street community garden with landscaping for bees. And in Five Points, Sun Ray Cinema is showing Queen of the Sun. 10% of Sweet Pete's Sales during events will be donated to Sustainable Springfield for the building of the Bee Flower Garden.

FITNESS WALK/NATURE WALK: . On the fourth Saturday of each month, the group meets at the front kiosk and walk in the woods Saturday at the Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens. There are two walks: one fitness and one nature-oriented. Both are free and open to the public. The 8 a.m. fitness walk is a solid three mile hike through the Arboretum's trails with a biologist/naturalist. The Nature Walk starts at 9:30 a.m.

RIVERSIDE ARTS MARKET: Riverside Arts Market is an outdoors arts event that features local artists, live music, street performers, gourmet food artesans, fresh local produce and more. Held Saturdays, March-December, in the historic Riverside-Avondale district of Jacksonville, Riverside Arts Market encourages the support of local artists, performers and food artesans, and offers an alternative local shopping outlet for the Jacksonville community. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. off Riverside Avenue.

TENNIS THANKS THE TROOPS: On May 26 & 27 starting at 11 a.m., Maharaj Tennis and Omni Amelia Island Plantation will be conducting adult and junior tennis events and donating 100% of proceeds to ThanksUSA initiative. "Tennis Thanks the Troops" is a United States Professional Tennis Association fundraiser assisting ThanksUSA fund scholarships for families of military men and women.

MEMORIAL DAY AT THE ZOO: The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is offering $2 off already discounted military admission with military ID shown Saturday from 9 a.m. To 5 p.m.

OCEANWAY MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY: The Oceanway VFW Post 11406 annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Ferriera Cemetery is this Saturday, May 26, at 10:00 AM. The cemetery is located at the corner of Starratt and Tiki Rd. The actual Memorial Service will last about 30 minutes inside the cemetery underneath the flag pole.

NORTHEAST FLORIDA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION SCHOOLING SHOW: Spectators are welcome at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center for the Dressage Schooling Show Saturday, May 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Admission and parking are FREE! Dressage requires the horse and rider to combine the strength and agility of gymnastics with the elegance and beauty of ballet. Bring the whole family and enjoy a day at the Equestrian Center. For more information: www.nfladressage.org.

RIPLEY'S ST. AUGUSTINE "SUPER SECRET CELEBRATION": Join Ripley's St. Augustine for a "Super Secret Celebration" party on Saturday, May 26, at 7 p.m. where they'll unveil a new twist for the 60th year of their Red Trains. Rock out to a concert by Mini Kiss and watch some amazing feats of strength from Chad Netherland, a ten-time Guinness World Record holder. There will be free party train rides, paranormal investigations, food & drinks, games and activities. This is an all ages event and admission is FREE!

USA VS. SCOTLAND SOCCER: Kickoff is Saturday, May 26, at 8:00p.m. at EverBank Field. Tickets start at $22. Parking is $20 per vehicle.

SUNDAY MAY 27, 2012

832 DEPUTY DOGS RACE: They help solve crimes, find missing children and track down suspects - all in a days work! And now you can help the k-9's by participating in a big fundraiser Sunday! 832 Deputy Dogs, the group that trains blood hounds for service with police officers, is hosting a fundraiser race! You can run the 1-mile or 5k by yourself or with your 4-legged friend. It's at the Crescent Beach Park at 6 a.m. Registration fees start at $15.

MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY AT BJ'S WHOLESALE CLUB: If 200 members of the armed forces attend, BJ's Wholesale Club will donate $500 to the Jacksonville USO. Sunday, May 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., enjoy entertainment, burgers from Bubba Burger and plenty of BJ's food sampling! The first 50 Military children will receive a goody bag. There will be a balloonist, arts & crafts for the kids. Each Military family will also receive a raffle ticket to be entered to win a 1 year paid membership.

MEMORIAL DAY, MONDAY MAY 28, 2012

DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE MEMORIAL DAY: The city of Jacksonville is honoring our heroes at the Veterans Memorial Wall Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. with a pre-ceremony. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. Mayor Alvin Brown requests the pleasure of your company as we honor Jacksonville's fallen heroes.

MEMORIAL DAY RIVERFEST: The 24th annual Memorial Day Riverfest in Green Cove Springs will be held Monday May 28th 2012. Everyone is invited down to Spring Park for a variety of events. These events range from live entertainment, business expo, Freedom 8k Series and Mile run dedicated to the Wounded Warrior Program and fireworks.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AT BLUE CRAB FESTIVAL: The Memorial Day parade will start at 10am down St. Johns Ave with the Memorial Day ceremony starting after the parade at the amphitheater. Http://www.bluecrabfestival.com
