JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Our Student of the Week is a very soft spoken eighth-grader who seems to come alive when she's writing.

And we're not just talking about her writing assignments at LaVilla Middle School of the Arts.

Katie Hecht has won, or ranked high in, several school and county writing contests.

Katie's latest essay on hunger not only talked about her own experiences before she was adopted by a loving family, but her essay also featured an interview with one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who also dealt with hunger.

When asked why she chose this topic to write about, Katie explains, "Not a lot of people know about what's happening, so I like writing about that topic just to, like, open the eyes of people who just, like, don't know what's going on."

Cheryl Lemine, the school's Creative Writing Department Chair, nominated Katie for Student of the Week.

"When you're reading her work," Lemine says proudly, "it's not the work of someone who's just trying to finish the assignment. It's someone who has put themselves into it, and i think that a lot of times that maturity comes later."

Katie recently auditioned for, and was accepted to, the creative writing program at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts.
