JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Kathy Moeller says she has been faithfully doing Buddy Check 12 for years, but her fingers detected a rather unusual shape.
It didn't feel like a marble.
In fact, it didn't feel like a lump at all.
She says it felt more like a ridge.
"It felt like a small cell phone was in the bottom of my breast," she said.
Unusual description, no doubt. But Kathy makes a valid point.
Actually, two points.
One is that her fingers picked up a part of her breast that felt different than the rest of her breast. That's because she has done so many self exams that she's learned what lumps and bumps are normally there.
The second point is that her fingers ran across something hard. Typically, breast cancer feels hard.
Kathy encourages all women to do Buddy Check 12. She says it doesn't take long and it could save your life.
Kathy is the Director of the Medical Library for Shands/UF. She applauds her co-workers for participating in Buddy Check, as well.
If you'd like a Buddy Check kit, there is no charge. You can also send them anywhere in the world for free.
