JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One man is dead after a police-involved shooting at an apartment complex in Arlington.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which happened near the Casa del Rio St. Johns apartment complex at 3500 University Boulevard North, according to JSO Director of Investigations and Homeland Security John Hartley.

The victim in the shooting, who is not being identified right now, was pronounced dead at Shands, according to Hartley.

A month and a half ago, officers started doing undercover buys from Nathaniel Phillip Hill, 39, in apartment 906, Hartley said. Thursday, the officers came back to make another undercover deal for $40 in crack.

Hill pulled the officers into the apartment, and then the officers took the suspect and a second man to the ground.

A third man, who was killed in the shooting, pulled a gun and the officers told him to drop it. He did not and Officer Val Demps shot him once in the face and once in the hip.

Demps has been on the force for 23 years and this is his third police-involved shooting, Hartley said. Demps was awarded "Police Supervisor of the Year" by JSO earlier this year for overseeing two large undercover narcotics investigations in 2010.

"If you're going to deal in drugs and in the street crimes, you've got to deal with the consequences," said Casa del Rio tenant Kenny Reeves.

"That makes us feel good to know we have JSO out here and on the scene," said Patrice Woods, who lives down the street. "They're patroling the area and making it a whole lot safer."

The original investigation came from a tip, according to Hartley.

Reeves told First Coast News it's comforting to know JSO is listening.

"We know they're doing their job and our tax dollars are going to work," Reeves said.

Hill is in custody and is facing multiple charges. A juvenile is also in custody.
